Wheeling explained

Wheeling is a process that enables businesses to purchase renewable energy from an independent power provider (IPP) and receive it through the existing grid infrastructure. Instead of requiring on-site generation, energy is produced remotely and “wheeled” through the grid to your business location, providing a reliable, sustainable power supply that aligns with modern energy and sustainability goals.

Why switch to wheeled power?

icon

Effortless Scalability for Growing Needs

Wheeled power solutions are adaptable to growing energy needs, making it easy for businesses to scale up without needing additional infrastructure or operational adjustments.

icon

Zero Infrastructure & Maintenance

Wheeling eliminates the need for on-site generation infrastructure, sparing businesses the high costs of equipment, installation, and maintenance, while still accessing clean, renewable energy.

icon

Affordable & Stable Energy Rates

With wheeled power, businesses can lock in lower, stable rates by purchasing directly from an independent power producer. This shields them from fluctuations in energy prices and helps manage long-term energy budgets effectively.

icon

Maximized Renewable Integration

Because wheeling uses offsite power, businesses that cannot fully meet their energy needs with on-site generation can still significantly reduce their dependence on conventional grid power, enabling higher renewable energy adoption.

Industries that can benefit the most from wheeling

Whether you're looking for seamless grid integration, reliable battery storage, or backup power with generator integration, we've got you covered.

How it works

  1. Initial Consultation

Reach out to us to schedule an initial consultation. During this meeting, we will assess your energy needs, eligibility, and discuss the benefits of wheeling for your business. We will also answer any questions you may have about the process and requirements.

  2. Site and Eligibility Assessment

We will conduct a thorough assessment of your facility to confirm eligibility. This includes verifying grid compatibility, energy consumption, and any municipal or Eskom billing arrangements to ensure your business can participate in wheeling.

  3. Proposal and Agreement Drafting

Based on your energy profile and assessment results, we prepare a customised proposal outlining the terms of the wheeling agreement. This proposal includes the proposed rate at which your business will purchase electricity, as well as any additional costs, responsibilities, and projected benefits. After your review and feedback, a final wheeling agreement is drafted for your approval.

  4. Agreement Confirmation with IPP

Phoenix Energy finalises the agreement with EDF, our trusted independent power provider, for your wheeling needs. EDF will generate the renewable energy that will be wheeled to your facility through the grid.

  5. Grid Coordination with Eskom

Our team coordinates with Eskom to establish the technical setup required for wheeling, ensuring all infrastructure is aligned and compliant with grid requirements. This includes setting up metering and monitoring systems to track your wheeled energy.

  6. Begin Wheeling and Monitor Progress

Once all agreements are finalised and infrastructure is in place, your wheeling service begins.
